Sendero a Cerro Gordo Cerro Gordo trail

This route is not long (8 km) and can be done in one morning, and many people even prefer to do it by bicycle rather than on foot. It runs in its first part through dry and irrigated fields, in its middle section through a thick and extensive pine forest and, at the end, through an area of olive and almond groves in the vicinity of the village.

We start at the Plaza de la Ermita (1), next to the statue of El Carbonero. In the small fountain that there is next to it we can load our bottle of water.

Going up towards Hospital street we take the Alpujata road, which passes under the A-355 (2) road that on one side leads to Marbella and on the other leads to Malaga. The road is concreted, so the ride is quite comfortable. As we advance, the whole landscape of Alpujata explodes before our eyes, while we cross some olive groves located in very steep terraces and, as we descend to the plain, other olive groves and almond farms where there are some houses.
Arriving at a junction with three paths we take the one on the right (3), which is asphalted and ascends to the soccer field (4). We will skirt it and in the following crossing, we take the lane on the right, which takes us to the source of Morales (5), in whose ferric waters we will be able to refresh ourselves.

Returning a little back we ford the creek and follow the Portillo de las Ánimas trail (6), whose first stretch is quite narrow.

When we reach a concrete lane we turn left and begin a descent surrounded by green orchards until we reach a new crossroads, (7) where we turn right, passing over another stream and taking the Cerro Gordo lane. It is a set of hills of little elevation and covered by an extensive pine forest whose ascending lane invites us to climb calmly. Once up everything is flat and smooth ascents by numerous curves in a beautiful pine forest of repopulation, where pure air, tranquility and the song of the birds are mixed (8).

At the moment we begin to start the descent we observe on our left an avocado farm and, shortly after, an electricity pylon and a small hut. In that place there is a crossing (9) with a lane to the left that we must take and that leads us to the Industrial Park of Monda. The slope is a little steep and the ground is a little loose, so be careful. Arriving at a point where we can see the warehouses of the industrial park we will find a vertical wooden sign (10) that points us to the left, which is the path that we must follow. Part of it can be rolled to perfection but there are one or two sections where it is better to get off. This area is again occupied by agricultural areas dominated by olive trees.

The last stretch of the path turns into a well-floored lane, and as we drive along it in the direction of Monda, we will pass under the A-355 road again until we come out onto the old road (11) that takes us back to Monda. There we will be able to recharge our batteries in any of the bars or restaurants.
