Sendero a Cueva Santa Trail to Cueva Santa

This is a route that can be done quietly in the morning. At the beginning the route is flat and even downhill, but then the whole way to Cueva Santa is steep and can be a bit long because there is little tree vegetation to provide shade and make the route more visually entertaining.

This route is not recommended in summer due to the high temperatures, but the rest of the seasons the walk is especially beautiful and rewarding as the landscape is greener and more alive.canucha

This route starts at the Plaza de la Constitución (1) and from there we take several streets that lead us to the foot of the castle (2) where there is a panel that talks about the routes and the area. From there we take the old path of the road to Istán (3), which will take us through a very varied route that offers high land, flat land and slope until you get to the dry stream.

The diversity of this section is high as it crosses fields where dry land predominates with olive groves and some almond groves, followed by irrigated land, with some terraces in the vicinity of the stream.

Before starting the descent to the stream it is necessary to stop (4) to observe the landscape that opens before our eyes: in front of us rises Sierra Blanca, which on this side receives the name of Canucha, and to the right appear the places of Moratán and Gaimón, with Sierra Real (Istán) in the background and to its side, higher, the Sierra de la Nieve with the Torrecilla peak (Tolox).

The descent is made by an old road that retains part of the cobblestone (5) and that was the one that since ancient times connected our town with the neighboring Istán. We continue until arriving to the Dry stream, thin fluvial channel that lodges different species adapted to more generous hydrological conditions - in spite of the fact that it does not contain water almost most of the year - where we will be able to see rushes, reedbeds, oleanders, brambles...calzada-arroyo

The route continues ascending (6) through the Sierra Blanca massif, where Canucha belongs, and where Cueva Santa is located. This is a mountain range of limestone substrate that is in the process of regeneration, which is why it presents a somewhat bare aspect and in whose inner depths, thanks to its geological nature, the phenomenon of the formation of caves occurs . The limestone rock generates a special relief called karstic relief, which is produced by the erosion practiced by water. Erosion leaves, on the surface, very characteristic relief forms, but also in the interior of the limestone mountains, such as caves, shelters or chasms.

Finally we will arrive at Cueva Santa (7), which besides being a small wonder of nature, has been an important human space for its possible occupation by prehistoric men, but also for having been the place chosen by the goatherds to take refuge with their livestock for hundreds of years, as well as the hiding place of some fugitives in past times .

Visitors are kindly requested not to pull out stalagmites or stalagtites, nor to run their hands over the forming speleothems as this action damage the growth process that may take hundreds of thousands of years, depriving future visitors of their enjoyment.

Above the cave there is a cross (8) on the edge of a ravine from where you can enjoy excellent panoramic views of both the coast and the interior, dotted with mountain ranges, mountains and hills that give them their strong rugged character.

We return by the same route and once we reach the village it is advisable to recover our strength in some of its tapas bars or restaurants.
