Natural Park and Biosphere Reserve of the Sierra de las Nieves

The town of Monda is located on the slopes of a small highland approximately 337 meters above sea level and its district covers about 58.11 square kilometers. It is one of the eight other villages, in the region of Sierra the Nieves. It has Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park and is integrated within a Biosphere Reserve - the same name- an area that is slightly larger than the region itself and which was declared by UNESCO in 1995 under the initiative of the inhabitants and the town councils that comprise it. It belongs to the International Network of Biosphere Reserves for its high, rich and unique natural, ethno-social and cultural values.

This high mountain region is located in the Penibetic System and has a diverse geology. Three types of mountain landscapes stand out in it, which throughout history have conditioned one or the other economic uses: the white sierras, with a grayish limestone substrate with the highest altitudes, which contain large quantities of water and are the origin of the rivers and springs of the mountains; the reddish sierras, are of lower altitude and where peridotite is abundant, a rock that oxidizes on contact with the air turning reddish, and which is rich in metals; and finally, the brown sierras, of scarce entity and clayey components, the most suitable for cultivation.

The richness of the Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park and Biosphere Reserve is based on the multiplicity of the ecosystems and plant and animal species that exist within it. This multiplicity is the result of the dialectic between elements of geological, thermal, pluviometric, climatological, tectonic, orogenic, etc., that give rise to a great variety of soils and substrates, which powerfully influences the conformation of plant species which, in turn, conditions the existence of certain animal species. But it is also the creative and destructive hand of man that through the centuries and the development of various economic activities (agriculture, livestock, forestry, charcoal, ...) has affected and shaped the plurality of landscapes and ecosystems that exist in this beautiful natural space.

As for the vegetation, we have already pointed out that the great variety of soils, in conjunction with other factors, gives rise to a wide range of plants, from herbaceous, through shrubs and reaching trees such as pines, chestnuts, oaks, cork oaks, gall oaks and another of the jewels of the park: the Spanish fir, a tree species of glacial origin, its importance, at the scientific level, was highlighted by researchers as early as the nineteenth century. But its exploitation by man (coal, fuel for blast furnaces, ...) and fires came to seriously damage it. Today, with the protection measures it is subject to, it is in full expansion. The largest forests are in the heart of the Natural Park, but in the area near Canucha, in the Sierra Blanca, we also find some "spots" of Spanish firs.

Among the fauna we must remember that there were predators such as bears, wolves, lynxes and bearded vultures, now extinct, but remain with a high degree of conservation the mountain goat, the otter and the golden eagle, among others. The wild goat is the most representative and emblematic mammal of the entire Natural Park, and can be seen on the steep peaks and mountains. There is also an abundance of hybrid pigs, roe deer, foxes, genets,...

There are many varieties of amphibians, reptiles and fish, thanks to the variety of ecosystems. A special place should be given to birds: the geographical location of the Natural Park, close to Africa, is a passage and nesting place for more than 150 species of birds. Among the birds of the Natural Park are the Iberian birds of prey (goshawks, hawks, vultures,...), nocturnal birds (owls, owls,...) and others such as blackbirds, herons, partridges,...

It is worth mentioning the existence of a great variety of invertebrates, insects, many of them endemic, exclusive of the Natural Park itself.

El medio geográfico mondeño      The geographical environment of Monda

Within this rich environment is the town of Monda, boundry with Ojén, to the south, Istán to the west, Tolox and Guaro to the north, and Coín to the east. Part of the village is within the protected area of the Natural Park, specifically towards the northwest, bordering Tolox and Istán.

The relief of the mountainous area is also very varied, with the highest altitudes to the west and south. In the eastern area stands out the Sierra Blanca, better known as Canucha, which we share with Ojén, Istán and Marbella. Being a limestone substrate gives rise to the rivers Almadán, in Ojén, and Molinos, in Istán. In our municipality, associated to this massif, we have the Arroyo Seco, whose name gives an account of its meager flow.

In this environment there is an abundance of shrub vegetation, such as junipers or gorse, pines and some Spanish firs. On the other hand, in the southern area is the Sierra de Alpujata, which has a reddish complexion due to its high component of peridotitic rocks. In addition to shrubby vegetation, there is an abundance of cork oaks, from which cork is extracted. In this place there are two riverbeds, the “Arroyo de Alpujata” and the “Arroyo del Viejo”, which join downstream to form the “Arroyo Alcazarín”, the vassal of the Río Grande. The first ones encircle a beautiful and terraced area of orchards that sink their roots in the Andalusí period and where very old irrigation channels, pools and hydraulic mills are maintained.

To the southwest we have another remarkable relief where dolomite and limestone abound, but smaller than the previous ones. This area is called Cerro Gordo, where there is a beautiful route that can be done on foot or by mountain bike. This place is repopulated by a thick and green mantle of pine forest.

The northern and eastern part of the municipality has much lower altitudes in relation to the previous ones, showing a smoother relief, with a landscape dominated by gentle hills. Towards the east, towards the valley of the Guadalhorce river and Malaga, the relief gradually softens. The soils of this last area, with clay substrates, have been used for agriculture, especially dry farming, where the olive tree stands out above all, followed by the almond tree, nowadays at a very low level.

As far as riverbeds are concerned, it should be noted that the area is integrated in the hydrographic basin of Río Grande (subsidiary of the aforementioned Guadalhorce River) although its course does not flow through the municipal district, but there are several streams that end up flowing into this river -some of which have already been mentioned-, among which the Arroyo Alcazarín and the Arroyo Seco stand out as the main ones. Other secondary ones are the Arroyo del Rosal, the Arroyo de la Lucía and the Arroyo de Gaimón.

The abundance of limestone mountain ranges makes karstic formations proliferate, especially caves and chasms. In Sierra the Nieves the most important is the Sima Gesm, but the whole territory is full of small chasms, caves and covachas. The one that stands out de more in Monda is the one called Sima del Camino Alto, although of small dimensions, houses numerous and beautiful geological forms such as the typical stalactites but also the singular eccentric ones.
